About Kumaun University

Kumaun University, a residential-cum-affliating university, came into existence in the year 1973 by notification No. (10)/8651/15/75(85)/64 dated 23 November, 1973 under the Act No. 10 of State Legislature (U.P. State Universities Act, 1973 now adopted by Uttarakhand State) with the merger of two Government Colleges, D.S.B. Government P.G.College, Nainital and Almora Government P.G. College, Almora. These Constituent Colleges were later elevated to the status of University Campuses by Government order No. E-1861/GS dated 14/15 March, 1994.
The University Grants Commission, New Delhi granted recognition to the University under section 12-B of the UGC Act, 1956 and its name appears at serial No. 177. Since then the Kumaun University is receiving central assistance from the UGC. The academic wing of the University is spread over in three campuses (D.S.B. Campus, Nainital, SSJ Campus, Almora and newly constructed Campus at Bhimtal) with an area of 5,31,373 sq.mt. (160 acres), the total built up area being 3,00,000 sq. mt. 47 Government colleges under the administrative control of the State Government, 50 Private institute and 01 Government Aided College, spread over in six districts of Kumaun region are affiliated with the University. It is the biggest State University of the state (Uttarakhand) which caters the need of about 1,50,000 students by providing a high quality educational experience in diverse learning environments and promoting the values and institutions of democracy that prepare students to lead lives of personal integrity and civic responsibility and service to in a global society.
The University is famous for building and promoting a system, which is accessible to people of diversied faiths, races, creeds and cultures and is striving hard for excellence in the creation and dissemination of knowledge, promoting the holistic development of students and preparing them to lead lives of personal integrity, civic responsibility and service to the society. Efforts to galvanize the academic fervor and creative instincts of the youth coming from socially and economically backward areas, to strengthen the interface of academia with the government and industry and prepare the always undertaken. The University is committed to raise the academic standard of all its. three campuses, viz., DSB Campus, Nainital, SSJ Campus, Almora and Sir JC Bose Technical Campus, Bhimtal and 100 affiliated colleges and institutes. For the last three years the University has made untiring efforts to develop some well recognized departments of scientic and social research and these have been attracting faculty members and students from different parts of the country.
Kumaun University became an ideal for all the state universities before the creation of new state of Uttarakhand for regularizing academic session, making education more participatory, creating serious academic atmosphere, generating resources without taxing the students, maintaining strict discipline among students and imposing code of conduct for teachers and this approach is still continuing. Keeping in view its overall achievements the University was accredited with 'A' Grade status in the year 2015 by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC). The University has a regular membership of Association of Indian Universities.
In order to cater the technical professional and vocational education, another campus of the University has been developed at Bhimtal. The University is imparting quality education and research facilities in all the eight faculties:

  2. Faculty of Science (Botany, Forestry, Chemistry, Computer Science, Geology. Mathematics, Physics, Statistics, Zoology, Biotechnology, Information Technology and G.I. Science)
  3. Faculty of Commerce (B.Com., B.Com.(Hon.), M.Com.)
  4. Faculty of Management (BBA, MBA, P.G. Diploma in Tourism, MBA in Tourism, MBA Executive, MBA Rural Management)
  5. Faculty of Education (B. Ed. and M. Ed.)
  6. Faculty of Law (LL.B. and LL.M.)
  7. Faculty of Technology (B. Pharma, and M. Pharma.)
  8. Faculty of Visual Arts (B.F.A. and M.F.A.)
Various self-finance courses are also being run by the University.
An important collaborative international project “Landscape Asia – Transformation processes, Identity changes and Socio-economic dynamics” which is part of ve Asian nations (India, Laos, Nepal, Vietnam and China) has been signed in December 2013 between Department of Geography, Kumaun University, Nainital and University of Paris for the period 2014 to 2017 under the funding support from Ministry of Research, Paris France. Space geology and field geology based investigations are being conducted to monitor ongoing surface deformations in Uttarakhand Himalaya and adjoining Ganga Plain, funded by the DST, Govt. of India and MoST, Govt. of Taiwan, under the prestigious Indo-Taiwan S&T Cooperation programme. Problem of sequential growth of the Ladakh magmatic arc and tectonic evolution of the Shyok Suture Zone of the Nubra valley (northern Ladakh) is being studied in collaboration with Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences, MIT – Massachusetts Institute of Technology, USA and the study of timing of the India-Asia collision and tectonic evolution of pre-syn collision sedimentary basins in Ladakh is underway in collaboration with Department of Geology, Trinity College, Dublin, Ireland. On cave researches for high resolution climatic changes in Central Himalaya research works are being carried out.
physics, biology, materials and engineering and build activities that develop interdisciplinary research and training, University has established a new Centre for Nanoscience and Nanotechnology to advance academic and technological research and development in nanoscience and nanotechnology. International Universities and research institutions like Virginia Commonwealth University, University of Bridgepost, USA, Tindal Consultancy Services (Pvt. Ltd.), Nanyang Technical University, The University of Sydney, Konkuk University Seoul, Korea are collaborating in this project. The Production and commercialization of graphene for advance nanomaterial based products (Collaboration with Industries) is the ultimate aim of this centre which will not only earn revenue for the University but for the state and country. Research programs in Photodynamic therapy (PDT), Cancer Chemoprevention, Nanotechnology, Pharmacogenomics, Anti-Cancer Pharmaco-nutrition and other elds of Cancer Biology at Kumaun University Nainital are under process.
Resource Development Centre, to the University on 10th of October, 2006 and it started functioning on 12th of February, 2007. The UGC-HRDC, Kumaun University, Nainital shares the vision of making quality the dening element of higher education in India. It has been envisaged that the College will engage not only in its primary task of training of teachers of higher education institutions, but will also undertaken varied innovative extension activities in the academic arena. The UGC-HRDC Nainital, the first Human Resource Development Centre in the state of Uttarakhand, is playing a make the HRDC a centre for academic activity that could contribute to the development of this Himalayan region.
As per University Grants Commission guidelines under its XIth Plan the Internal Quality Assurance Cell was constituted by the University on October 30, 2009 with a committee consisting of expert members for guiding and quality enhancement in teaching, research, examination and administrative activities of Kumaun University. Several benchmarks related to quality teaching, research and administrative activities were provided to each unit of the University for Implementation and assessment on annual basis. Performance based appraisal system along with academic performance indicators are being submitted annually by teachers as per UGC regulations 2016, and these regulations are being strictly adhered to for appointments of faculty members.
The Centre has been designed to act as catalyst for promoting and strengthening women's studies through seminars, teaching, research, curriculum, eld and extension work, training and continuing education. This Centre is fullling the national goals in the eld of women empowerment More and effective use of Information and Communication Technology is being encouraged by the University invariably in all the works. All information related with departments, admissions, rules and regulations of the University, advertisements, recruitments, results etc., are being uploaded and modied on regular basis in the websites by newly established Digital Initiative Cell (DIC). DIC is also being used in improving the quality of learning, curriculum enrichment, professional development of teachers and resource sharing. Some departments have been granted the facility of smart class rooms also.
National Cadet Corps – Army and Naval wings are doing commendable work for the overall development of the students. Recently Cadets of Naval wing of DSB Campus secured first position in four activities at Karwar, Karnataka and for the first time bagged top 10 position. NCC cadets are involved in environmental up gradation, plantation, lake cleaning, campus cleaning and intoxication free society programmes, Digital India Imitative, Yoga, Swach Bharat Abhiyan and several other awareness campaigns. It is for the first time in 2017 both the ANOs of the DSB Campus were awarded commendation certicate from the Chief Minister for their achievement.
NSS Units of both the campuses are actively engaged to render social services in rural, urban and slum areas. Intensive campaign for environmental up-gradation, intoxication-free society, avoiding female feticide, discipline drive among the students, blood and eye donation etc. has been emphasized during the camp hours.
The University has also instituted an independent Chair bearing the name “Mahadevi Verma Peeth”, at Umagarh, Ramgarh in the area of language and literature research, fully funded by the Government of Uttarakhand. Ministry of Culture, Government of India sanctioned a Grant of Rs. 80 lakhs to Mahadevi Verma Srijan Peeth, Kumaun University for construction of Writer's Home in the name of Amritlal Nagar under Amritlal Nagar Birth Centenary Commemoration and an amount of Rs. 40 lakhs has already being released as first installment thereof.
In the Faculty of Law at S.S.J. Campus, Almora “Free Legal Aid and Counselling Centre” has been established as per the provisions of Bar Council of India. The Centre provides free and fair legal advice to the poor and needy persons. Besides, this, the faculty also ensures its representation in the district level Legal Services Authority. The University Grants Commission has sanctioned a Community College to the University.
University has produced Padama Vibhushan, Padma Shree, FNAs', Scientists, Social Scientists, Writers, Poets, Historians, IAS, IPS, IFS and other Central Services Officers, Armed Forces Officers, Provincial Civil Servants, MPs, MLAs and other renowned Politicians, Businessman, Corporates, Sports persons and many other successful citizens in different walks of life.

Recently, Kumaun University has secured 32nd rank in The India Today Group Survey of Indian Universities. The QS BRICS Countries Survey of 9500 universities has also placed Kumaun University at rank 301.
